Umeå University
The Biomedicine program in Umeå is for those who are interested in the biological and chemical interaction in the healthy human body and the changes that occur with disease.
The first year of the program gives you a broad and stable foundation to stand on, with the human body’s anatomy and fundamental chemistry during the fall and biomedical chemistry with basic medicinal chemistry during the spring semester.
The second education year focus on bacteria and viruses, our genetic inheritance, cell function and the human physiology.
During the last and third year the knowledge from all three years is put to the test when the students take the 30 credits long course of pathology, symptoms and diagnostics. The third year also includes courses of immunology and pathogenic bacteria and viruses and is finished with a 15 credits long exam work.
Almost all teachers on the program are active researchers which will give the students the opportunity to take part in recent developments in the field of biomedical research and get the chance to work with the latest techniques and up-to-date laboratory equipment. The education gives a foundation in scientific methodology and after the Biomedicine program there are several national and international master programs to choose from for the ones interested in further education. Potential workplaces after the education are pharmaceutical companies, biomedical/biotechnology companies or an academic career within the university.
The city of Umeå with its 29000 student’s offers, in addition to the studies, among other things a campus where all students regardless of program are gathered. Here you also have IKSU which is one of Europe’s biggest indoor training facilities. Together with the friends you will make you can experience a good fellowship and pleasant atmosphere. You will also have the opportunity to go on nice parties on the week-ends with for example the other Biomedicine students.
Interview with student at the Biomedicine program in Umeå
Daniel
Second semester at the Biomedicine program
Why did you choose to study biomedicine?
I chose to study biomedicine because it is a program that focuses on subjects that I’m really interested in, such as the body and how all its systems work.
Why did you choose Umeå and what makes Umeå such a good town for students?
I chose Umeå because it was close and that it had a good reputation as a town for students. For me as a student, Umeå is a nice city because it’s relatively close to everything and the nature is a feature of the cityscape.
Do you have any plans for the future after your studies?
After the studies nothing is for sure at this point but maybe I will continue with further studies and perhaps get a doctor’s degree.
