Karolinska Institutet i Stockholm

At the Karolinska Institute, you study close to a world full of both science and clinical medicine and this is noticeable throughout the entire biomedical program. While the courses dig deeply into fields such as cell biology, organic chemistry, physiology and neurology the connection to the medical world is never lost and the content always feels relevant to the education.

The Karolinska Institute is one of the world’s top universities in biomedical sciences. In 2009’s official “Academic Ranking of World Universities” KI defended its position as Europe’s highest ranked university for clinical medicine and pharmacy as well as being positioned 8th worldwide. KI is also ranked as Sweden’s finest University all categories and celebrates its 200th anniversary 2010.

The education facilities are located in the middle of one of the most prominent scientific environments in the world and the professors are both cunning and able to give the students all the tools necessary to succeed in their studies. Being inspired by such an atmosphere and getting to talk to the professors during their lectures gives great opportunities for learning more about their ongoing research and maybe even join one of their teams for a shorter laboratory project over the summer or the exam project written during the sixth semester.

The Bachelor Program in biomedicine aims to give the student the best possible prerequisites for continuing reading a master education within the biomedical field. However, the Bachelor program could easily be combined with economical studies or similar to proceed with a career within the health economical area instead of the more traditional strive for a Ph. D. or a position within a pharmaceutical company.

Stockholm might not be your typical small town student city, but there are plenty of student activities at KI. In 2009 KI hosted the Nobel Night Cap, the unofficial afterparty of the Nobel Banquet. Seven of the Nobel prize winners were present at the party together with around 700 students and other guests. In which other city do you have the opportunity to go out partying alongside the Nobel prize winners? Aside from hosting the Nobel Night Cap every fourth year, KI offers lots of other activities including the Amphiox, the Introgasque and the Lucia ball. Special for the biomedicine program is that the students go away on a three day camp during the introductory week in order to get to know each other better from the start.

There are also several other universities in Stockholm which, together with KI, host over 80 000 students giving rise to a rich and easily accessible student life without taking away from the atmosphere of living in a big city. Stockholm is considered one of the world’s most beautiful cities containing many must sees including its renowned archipelago, a site not to be missed during the summer.

In short, KI is a world leading university and a highly inspiring place to study at and that it is located in such a wonderful city like Stockholm, only makes things better.
